“Self-control is the chief element in self-respect, and self-respect is the chief element in courage.”

Abstinence is a state of self-control between free enjoyment and complete renunciation. It is considered essential for success in practical life and spiritual practice. Spiritually restrained is the quality of the soul. It is considered to be the innate nature of the soul.

Satisfaction of senses is not possible through free abstinence. A restraint-free sense leads the individual and society to decline. There is a difference between restraint and suppression. There is control in moderation. In many practices, the seeker is asked to control his instincts rather than suppress them. Suppressing your desires will lead to outbursts in later life and will bring bad results.

Self-control is the ability to control the emotion, desire, and behavior displayed to achieve an objective or avoid punishment. In psychology, it is also called self-control.

Educate yourself to self-control, to the habit of holding passion and prejudice and evil tendencies subject to an upright and reasoning will, and you have done much to abolish misery from their future and crimes from society.

  1. I love that quote! I may steal it and link back to you if you don’t mind? Wonderful post – you’ve got me thinking about how my lack of self control in the past might well be related to a lack of self esteem! I completely agree suppressing our desires – you actually give them strength to the point they break out in unhealthy ways. Thank you for sharing 🙏
